The Feast of St. Gerard Majella is celebrated annually on October 16. Known as the patron saint of mothers, expectant mothers, and childbirth, St. Gerard holds a special place in the hearts of many families.
This year, our parish celebrated his feast day on October 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the Shrine of St. Gerard Majella, with Most Reverend Nicholas Anthony DiMarzio as the main celebrant.
Nearly 300 parishioners attended this beautiful Mass. At its conclusion, each person received an envelope containing the Novena to St. Gerard Majella, a St. Gerard medal, a prayer for motherhood, additional prayers, and a handkerchief touched to his relic, along with an explanation of its special tradition.
According to tradition, St. Gerard once visited a family and accidentally left his handkerchief behind. When a young girl offered to return it, he told her to keep it, saying she might need it someday.
Years later, when the girl was expecting a child, she experienced a difficult childbirth. Remembering Gerard's words, she asked for the handkerchief. According to the account, after it was placed near her, she safely delivered her baby.
Since then, the handkerchief has become a cherished symbol of St. Gerard's intercession for mothers, expectant mothers, and their unborn children—a reminder of faith, hope, and trust in God's loving care.
